3 Galapagos penguins, the bird is 53 cm long, it is a relatively small, black and white coloured penguin, the galapagos penguin is endemic on the Galapagos Islands. About 95% of the breeding population was on the islands Isabela and Fernandina, in the western part of the archipelago, around 2006. About 5% occurred on the smaller islands Bartolomé, Santiago, Floreana and a few other small islands in the middle and south of the archipelago. The habitat of these penguins is for a small part north of the equator, which runs through the Galapagos archipelago. Therefore it is the only species of penguin which (partly) occurs on the northern hemisphere. Yet the distribution of this seabird is strongly connected with relatively cool ocean water which is rich in nutrients. The birds forage in the sea area west of the archipelago and move up to 23,5 km from their nest and immature birds move up to 64 km from their breeding colony. Birds that breed once in a particular colony remain loyal to this site in 80% of cases.[1]
