No visit to Umbria in Central Italy is complete without a visit to the famous town of Assisi.
As one of the spiritual centres of Italy, Assisi is famous as the birthplace of St Francis (San Francesco) the patron saint of Italy. St Claire also lived and died in the town and there is a convent in her name.
One of the main attractions of the town is therefore the religious sites such as the Basilica of St Francis and the Basilica of St Claire. But the town also has some wonderful architecture waiting to be discovered and spectacular views as it is high on a mountain side. The town holds regular events, festivals and celebrations and sometimes when you visit you may be lucky enough to see a medieval costume procession complete with flags and drums. In this photo art image the tourists stand and watch as flag bearers walk through the picturesque street. This image is based on an original photograph by my husband, Graham Irwin, worked on digitally and given an artistic effect.
