The Academy Building (1891) is the main building of Utrecht University. From its inception, the University of Utrecht was located in several annexes of the Dom Church, notably the cloister and the chapter house. The latter hall is connected to the Academy Building and still serves as an auditorium today. On 23 January 1579, the Union of Utrecht was concluded in this hall. It was not until the nineteenth century that the need for a representative university building on Domplein arose. The Academy Building was built in the Neo-Renaissance style, the style of humanism.
