African elephants are very large gray animals with a long trunk, big ears and tusks in both sexes. The big ears are used, among other things, to drive the heat away. Youngsters are born very hairy. Adult animals still have short bristles on the trunk and chin. This is a savanna elephant. Elephants are herbivores, the females live in groups, under the guidance of the oldest or largest cow. They are generally family groups, and females stay with a group all their lives. As soon as there are more than ten animals in a group, the group will split. Friendly ties are maintained between related females from different groups. Males live in separate male groups.
