Andermatt is a municipality in Switzerland. It is located in the Urser valley, which is bordered to the south by the Gotthard massif.
Andermatt is an important traffic junction. Here the roads leading to three historic mountain passes converge: the Furka Pass, the Gotthard Pass and the Oberalp Pass, to the west, south and east respectively. Only to the north, to Göschenen and further towards Lucerne, is there a road downhill. This passes the wild Schöllenenschlucht, over which the Teufelsbrücke is built.
The Urseren, the valley in which Andermatt lies, is crossed by the Furkareuss river. The valley extends for less than 10 km. The Oberalp pass begins in Andermatt. The two other places in the valley are Hospental, the start of the Gotthard Pass, and Realp, the start of the Furka Pass. There are very few trees in the area.
Andermatt has a station, where the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn trains run: towards Valais, by tunnel under the Furka Pass, to Göschenen and to Disentis/Mustér, over the Oberalp Pass. Previously, all traffic crossing the Gotthard Pass passed through Andermatt. Since the opening of the motorway tunnel in 1980 between Göschenen and Airolo, only traffic passes through Andermatt, going over the three pass roads
