About the artwork

an episode in the life of Christ, an event of his passion placed immediately after entering Jerusalem. then the Last Supper and before his arrest in the same garden after his denunciation by Judas. It will follow his crucifixion.

Jesus is depicted praying at night in a garden known as that of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem; three of his disciples, Peter , John and James the Minor , accompanying him, sleep not far away. Angels, present before the praying Christ, offer him a chalice to drink (in acceptance of his destiny). The presence in the distant setting of views of Jerusalem's city walls is exactly reminiscent of the place.

Andrea Mantegna (Piazzola sul Brenta (province of Padua), circa 1431 - Mantua, Sept. 13, 1506) was an Italian painter. In 1460 he was appointed court artist of the house of Gonzaga, the dukes of Mantua.

Mantegna was a renaissance artist, so he used many classical elements in his work. Mantegna was influenced by Donatello in this regard. Mantegna's use of perspective was magnificent for the time. He also knew the anatomy of the human body well, and he was also able to use the difficult technique of shortening.
