The contrast between the bright luminous goddess of the hunt Diana, champion of chastity, and the partly lascivious, partly frightened hairy fauns looking at her could hardly be greater. Their hands almost meet in the middle of the canvas, but the rear faun manages to stop his companion just in time. Thus, the fragile opposition of Goddess and creature of nature, of purity and instinct, of the sublime and the grotesque is maintained, and with her sexy half-naked is the stimulus to look at something that is forbidden. The figure of the half-naked Diana continues the long tradition of representing female reclining figures.
A faun is a mythological creature. It was a god from Roman legend. Later, the faun was often depicted as a forest god.
A faun has the back body of a buck, with split hooves, and the upper body of a human being. It has horns on its head. And is often depicted with a pan flute. In the Middle Ages the faun was seen as a devil, its billygoat legs were its landmark.
