This photo art image shows part of the ceiling of the Cafe Americain on Leidseplein in Amsterdam. It depicts the beautiful art deco lighting illuminated at night, casting a wonderful glow against the dark interior which is very atmospheric. The cafe was built in 1902 as part of the Hotel American. The architect was G J Rutgers and he had it built and decorated in art deco style.
The name art deco comes from arts decorators, a style that appeared in France just before World War 1. It combines modernist styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials.
