Bird of paradise flower or bird's head flower (Strelitzia reginae) is a substantial, up to 2 m tall, perennial herb. The petiole is up to 1.2 m long. The leaves resemble those of the banana and grow in two rows. The leaf blade is oblong, 20-70 × 6-15 cm in size, leathery and stiff with a thick middle vein and many thin lateral veins.
The flowers open one after the other. The inflorescence has a boat-shaped, 12-26 cm long, often perpendicular, gray-green and often red-edged bract, from which one to three orange and violet-colored flowers protrude at the top. The flower consists of three free, 8-12 cm long, orange petals and three violet petals, two of which are skewered around the style and the five stamens. The third petal is much smaller. The fruits are leathery, triangular box fruits with many seeds with an orange appendage.
The name bird of paradise flower is given because the variegated colors are reminiscent of birds of paradise. The flowers are actually pollinated by birds (honey suckers) in their area of origin. The bird of paradise flower is native to South Africa. It is grown worldwide in subtropical areas.
In Western Europe, the bird of paradise flower can be grown in temperate or warm greenhouse conditions.
