So you invariably find the stonechat on stony shores on the coast, in the harbour, among basalt boulders, at the bottom of the dyke.
They are common throughout the coastal area, so keep an eye out to see them scurrying around.
They are colourful birds, especially in summer when they are in fancy dress, they are beautiful to see.
Even in flight, their variegated plumage stands out with striking white rump and back and the white wing stripes. The legs are bright orange and the back feathers brown to orange-brown. In winter, it is all a bit more drably marked.
The stonechat does not breed in the Netherlands, but in northern regions such as Scandinavia, Greenland and Canada.
You therefore only see it outside the breeding season in our country, from late summer to early spring.
