The blacksmith's plover (Vanellus armatus) belongs to the family of lapwings and plovers (Charadriidae).
The plumage of this bird is black, white and grey with lots of contrast. The plumage is the same for both sexes. The outside of the wing is light grey and the inside is black. The chest and the front part of the back are also black. The underside of the tail and wings are white to light grey. The head is black with white spots on forehead and neck. They have a fairly small, dark grey beak; and have pointed thorns on the wing curves. The animal has long legs and deep red eyes. The body length is 28 to 31 cm and the weight 125 to 225 grams.
