Sri Lanka is a pearl in the Indian Ocean with a rich array of cultural and natural highlights surrounded by beautiful beaches and bays. The city of Anuradhapura flourished as Ceylon's political and religious capital for 1,300 years, but was abandoned after an invasion in the year 993. The beautiful site with its palaces, monasteries and monuments lay hidden in the dense jungle for many years, but is accessible again today.
