The mountains of northern Vietnam are home to many rice fields. The regular patterns of the fields create a beautiful landscape. The area around the mountain village of Sa Pa is famous for its magnificent rice fields.

The water buffalo or karbouw plays an important role in the lives of the Vietnamese. It is a strong animal and is well adapted to work in the wet and uneven rice fields. They see the buffalo as a cultural and sacred symbol.

The picture shows the buffalo in its element. In the mountains, with its paws in the muddy rice fields.
