Carpenter Bee on Marigold - a large carpender bee sitting on top of an orange marigold flower. To the left is a slice of dark green. The view is at birds eye showing the classic brown spot on the carpenter bees body. The body of the carpenter bee is very hairy , the top is a soft buttery yellow and the body a striped dark brown. Carpenter bees are an important pollinator. Despite of what their reputation is, carpenter bees do more good than harm. The carpenter bees are responsible for pollinating important plant species. They are tough bees who overwinter in harsh climates and manage to get around even in inclement weather. They don't have stingers but that does not stop them to fly into who or what ever they consider is an intruder. Due to their large size they are also considered a delicacy among birds.
