The Cathedral Basilica Sint Bavo is the cathedral of the diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam. This Haarlem church was founded by Bishop Caspar Bottemanne and designed in neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque style[1] by architect Joseph Cuypers, son of Pierre Cuypers, in the late nineteenth century[2]. The church is dedicated to Saint Bavo, the city's patron saint, whose worship originated from Ghent with which Haarlem had a trading relationship. Construction began in 1895 and was completed in 1930. On 2 May 1948, St Bavo's church was elevated to basilica by Pope Pius XII[3]. The cathedral basilica of St Bavo is, after St John's Cathedral in Den Bosch, the largest church in the Netherlands.
