There is only one moment in the day when you can take this picture in Deadvlei, Namibia (Africa). For this, I had to get out of bed as early as 4am. The sun had just risen, but was just barely poking above the dunes. As a result, the tree and dune behind it were still in the shade. This made for beautiful silky colours just before the sun came over the dunes and the temperature rose above 40 degrees.
The trees in Deadvlei, located in Namibia's Namib Desert, are ancient camel thorn trees, estimated to be around 900 years old. The harsh, dry conditions caused these trees to die long ago after the Tsauchab River, which once supplied them with water, changed its course. Due to the lack of moisture, the trees did not perish but were mummified and blackened by the bright sun. These ghostly silhouettes contrast sharply with the white clay plain, bright orange dunes and deep blue sky, creating a surreal and iconic landscape famous in the world of photography and natural history.
