An intricate combination of cog wheels and pieces of metal make up the eye-catching rusty mechanism of this old chaff cutter. This chaff cutter is a mechanical device that was used for cutting up hay or straw into smaller pieces before being mixed together with other forage to create feed for horses. Horses were, of course, used extensively in farming until they were replaced with the advent of tractors in the 1940s.
