I think, there is something seductive about this view of the mechanism of an old chaff cutter. The cog wheels, the different colour metal parts and not least the rust! Before the introduction of tractors in the UK in the 1940 s, horses were extensively used in agriculture and chaff cutters were used in the 19th and 20th centuries to prepare their feed. In practice, the chaff cutter chopped up straw and hay into small pieces which allowed it to be combined with other feed.
