Charlie Chaplin, born Charles Spencer Chaplin on 16 April 1889 in London, was an iconic English actor, comedian, director, composer and film producer. He became world-famous during the silent film era and is best known for his character The Tramp.
Chaplin grew up in a poor family and began performing in music hall shows at an early age. He emigrated to the United States in 1910 and quickly became a star at Keystone Studios. In 1914, he introduced his famous Tramp character, a male with a small moustache, a tight-fitting coat, a dress shirt and a hat.

Although his career was not without controversy, Chaplin remains one of the most influential figures in film history. He received a special Oscar in 1972 for his contribution to cinema. Chaplin died on 25 December 1977 in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland.
