Cholitas are Native Americans from Bolivia. All the works in this album are inspired by this powerful ethnic group with their colourful clothes. Please note that nowhere did I try to create or mimic a real reality, all these women were created from my imagination and the Cholitas were the basis of my inspiration. Cholitas normally wear colourful cloaks around their shoulders, multi-layered skirts around their hips and bowler hats on their heads. They usually wear their long black hair in two braids. Increasingly, they are seen as symbols of female strength, independence and industriousness. At the same time, they also deal with racism, poverty and oppression. As mentioned, these works are an ode to these women. And they make a particularly colourful work on your wall!
Carla van Iersel lives and works in the Netherlands. She photographs, paints, draws and creates digital illustrations. Her images are often a mix of these, creating unusual works of art. Photos that are drawn on or a painting that has been given a digital touch. By combining both analogue and digital techniques, anything is possible.
