This compact cityscape of Groningen shows the city's most important buildings brought together in poster format. Groningen is referred to as the City for short in the province of Groningen and parts of Drenthe. It is the largest city in the northern Netherlands. As a Hanseatic city, Groningen was part of the North German trade network, but it later became mainly a regional market centre. After this, Groningen gradually developed into an influential centre of power. During the 15th century, at the height of its power, the city could actually be considered a city-state.
Especially in the 12th and 13th centuries, many churches were built in Groningen, developing its own style: romanogothic. This style gives Groningen's churches an entirely unique character within the Netherlands.
The Martini Tower is the city's most famous building. From the 19th century, the beautiful University Building is also worth a visit. As is the Korenbeurs. Finally, the city's railway station is an eye-catcher, especially the station hall with its beautiful ceiling and tile panels.
The city's buildings were photographed individually and then compiled into a compact image.
Hello, I am Aad Trompert and I live together with Ria on our ship Tiberius on which we travel through the Netherlands and Europe. I was born in 1951 in Noordwijkerhout and educated as Urban Designer and Architect at the TU Eindhoven. I have designed many plans in The Netherlands. From expansion districts to new squares in the city. Now that I design less, I make pictures and drawings of the city. Because I still want to shape the city to my liking I change the pictures and compose new cityscapes. I do this not only in the Netherlands but also in Sweden and other countries in Europe where we sail with Tiberius.
