A fantastic view over Haarlem after nightfall.
The Cathedral Basilica Sint Bavo is the cathedral of the diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam. The church is located in the district Houtvaartkwartier. This Haarlem church was founded by Bishop Caspar Bottemanne and designed in eclectic and neo-Romanesque style by architect Joseph Cuypers, son of Pierre Cuypers, in the late nineteenth century.
The church is dedicated to Saint Bavo, the patron saint of the city, whose worship originated in Ghent with whom Haarlem had a business relationship. Construction began in 1895 and was completed in 1930. On 2 May 1948, Pope Pius XII elevated the Sint Bavokerk to the status of basilica. The cathedral basilica Sint Bavo is, after St. John's Cathedral in Den Bosch, the largest Roman Catholic church in the Netherlands.
