Marken is a former island, now a peninsula, in the Markermeer that has been connected to the mainland by a dike since 1957. The village belongs to the municipality of Waterland in the Dutch province of North Holland.
It was an independent municipality until 1991. In that year, the territory was added to the municipality of Waterland.
For at least a century the former fishing village has been a tourist attraction. The striking costume of Marken has contributed to this. Characteristic are the wooden houses on stilts. Even older are the so-called "yards", artificial elevations on which people lived.

I chose the latter. So enjoy, and I hope you will find something from my humble shop that you would love to have on one of your walls.
