The artwork Daisy Nights, Vintage Flights is an intriguing diptych (two panels) that uses different elements to create a sense of nostalgia and imagination.
The top panel shows a classic merry-go-round in black and white, like an old photograph.
The weathered texture and lack of color make the image seem timeless and evoke the charm of the past.
The whole work has a playful melancholy and reminiscent feel, as if the viewer is transported back to a carefree childhood.
The bottom panel is very different from the top one.
Here we see a pattern of bright blue daisy flowers against a dark background. The flowers are layered with a translucent layer, creating a modern, almost ethereal look.
The bright colors and abstract style create a dreamy atmosphere that contrasts with the retro style of the float. The blue color symbolizes emotions such as calmness and mystery.
The two panels make you think about the connection between memory and experience. The glider shows a carefree and nostalgic feeling, while the flowers have a thoughtful and dreamy quality. The work plays with two opposing ideas: movement versus stillness, realism versus abstraction, and black and white versus color.
The work was created using my own photographs digitally manipulated with layers of collage and acrylic paint from my previous paintings.
Created by db Waterman.
I remembered that as a young girl I so much liked to cut images from magazines to paste them into school agendas, scrapbooks and even on my bedroom door. Add to this the fascination I always had for walls filled with old posters, flaking paint, scrappy billboards and weathered paint, it opened an unexpected door for completely new opportunities. Completely unintended I found a new way of working, I felt pleasurably and comfortably at home in. What started out as copying old walls with worn out posters has grown into many series of new visual storytelling. Not simply just eclecticism, but bringing together many seemingly incoherent story lines into one completely new story, my own personal story. Initially it lacked the one thing that is important to me, the transparency that normally only is possible with the use of watercolor. The unforgiving layering of transparent watercolors is a challenge I would not want to miss and after a lot of trial and error I finally succeeded in getting the collages as transparent as a watercolor. Every layer of paper, oil, acrylic, pencil, crayon, ballpoint, watercolor, ink, charcoal and whatever else I use, remains visible in the artwork. You can imagine it made me feel the queen of the ball !
