Until the beginning of the 20th century, De Staart was little more than a slightly overgrown sandbank where the Dordrians collected coppice and fished for salmon. When the city grew considerably at the end of the 19th century, more and more companies moved to this area and the employees to the east were given their own neighbourhood. Shipyard De Biesbosch opened its doors in 1901. Exactly 100 years later, in 2000, the shipyard had to close its doors due to a lack of new orders.
