Delft lettuce oil by Jan Toorop
Delft salad oil chip, Jan Toorop, 1894
colour lithograph, h 950mm × w 625mm More object data
This poster was commissioned by the Nederlandsche Oliefabriek in Delft. Two women with long hair and robes occupy most of the scene. One of them is making lettuce. The women with their sharp contours distract attention from the actual advertising message: the bottles of lettuce oil. The poster has become an icon and gave Dutch art nouveau the nickname 'salad oil style'.
