Dreaming of Art Deco is a series of tranquil portraits inspired by the Art Deco style of the 1920s and 1930s. The symmetrical formal language with rich colors and geometric figures so characteristic of this style form has always appealed to me greatly.
As a basis for the mosaics, I drew six illustrations, each with its own color palette on a quiet light background. From these illustrations, I composed mosaics composed of 48x32 (1536) small tiles cut from vintage children's books.
The enchantment of such a special mosaic and the wonder that something that used to be the cover of an old children's book can now form such a picturesque collage as small tiles greatly capture my imagination.
In addition to artwork available for print, I also create handmade works in my studio. Feel free to take a look at the website!
From his studio in the forests of Appélbergen, south of the city of Groningen, Tessera creates enchanting works of art from tiny tiles cut from recycled covers of old children's books. Each work contains up to several thousand tiny tiles, carefully arranged in colorful compositions, creating an enchanting, pointillist, almost paint-like impression.
