The Bijenkorf department store in Rotterdam by architect W.M. Dudok: a legendary building with a tragic history. Opened in 1930, largely destroyed by bombing in 1940. The part that survived the bombs and the fire has been in use until it was demolished in 1960 for the construction of two main roads: Westblaak and Coolsingel.
Rebuilding Dudok's masterpiece on its original location is not possible without severely frustrating the city's traffic flow. This image shows an alternative location: on Kruisplein, opposite the new Central Station.
