The western world creates 40 tonnes of electronic waste (e-waste) per year. Under the heading of development aid, we ship our old computers, TVs, air conditioners and telephones, mostly to countries in West Africa. Agbogbloshie, the largest electronic garbage dump in the world, is located in the Ghanaian capital Accra. Here old appliances are disassembled in a search for copper wire and other parts still to be sold. During the incineration of residual materials, carcinogenic substances are released; the 3000 residents of the waste district rarely grow old but refuse to turn their backs on their only source of income.
