The Bonda form tribe in India in southern Orissa and number about 5,000. The name Bonda means "naked people". Influenced by the British, Bonda women started wearing loincloths in the mid-20th century, whereas traditionally they had only had a covering of many beaded necklaces. The Bondo are animist and are counted among the Adivasi. They have always opposed Hinduism and modernism and their villages are off limits to other Indians and foreigners. Bondo women have a shaved head and have a head-chest covering of beads. They are forbidden to wear a sari by the men. When they go to the market, they wear cloths that cover their backs and shoulders. When a Bondo girl is around 20, she marries a boy aged 14 to 15. Marrying a younger man guarantees the women care during their old age.
