Battle during the naval battle at Kijkduin, Willem van de Velde (II), c. 1675 The Night Battle is traditionally called this painting. In reality, the naval battle at Kijkduin took place during the day, on 21 August 1673. Cornelis Tromp sailed on the Golden Lion and his opponent Sir Edward Spragg on the Royal Prince. The battle is partly hidden behind clouds of smoke and powder fumes. On the right, the Dutch admiral's ship sinks, but Tromp continues the battle from a captured ship.
