Carla Van Iersel Profile picture Fine art portrait "Berber girl" The Berbers, who call themselves Amazigh (meaning 'free man'), are the original inhabitants of Morocco. Moroccan Arabs are descended from the Arab conquerors who first entered Morocco in the seventh century and from the Arab Muslims expelled from Spain in the 15th century. Berbers live in tribes and each tribe thus has its own social structure and rules. Each tribe has a leader or chief and it is certainly not unusual for the leader of the tribe to be a woman. Even in the Middle Ages, this was common. In various ways, women play an important role in Berber culture. For instance, they are important in many of the rituals, and it is also women in particular who transmit the tribes' oral traditions. The stories, music and poems cover a variety of topics, from love, family and community to the struggle for independence and Amazigh problems in modern times. Because the women transmit these stories from generation to generation, it is also the women who are the creators and preservers of Berber culture and identity. In addition, the women in Berber culture are also the artists. From Berber carpets, jewellery, music, clothes and, unique to Berber culture, tattoos. With each of these art forms, women express their own stories and those of their culture. From art, women also derive pride and self-confidence, as well as a way to support their families. Making art also has a religious aspect. The making itself is meditative and the art the women create is dedicated to their God. Material recommendation: this work will look best when printed on dibond or artframe. Should you decide to purchase this unique work, I wish you lots of pleasure from it! It will undoubtedly look great on your wall!
