I bought some black art board and thought I would play with it in my studio and see what I could achieve with it. I set out to create a firework display. You know, when you look up at the sky and the explosions happen and the colors and shapes spread across the night sky?
I decided to use a hammer smash technique to create this impression. Literally this involves using a hammer to hit puddles of paint, using certain angles and pressure to get the paint to spread where I want it. It takes practice to do this in a way that doesn't cover me and the studio in paint but it is a fun technique to use.
For this painting, I put the red and yellow at the bottom of the diagnonal paint puddles so a suggestion of those colors would be exposed when the top paint spread. Then I put the lighter colours of white, pale blue and bronze on top and created some puddles without the warmer colors. I think it really does create that feeling of a firework display don't you?
