The flowering viper's bugloss, known as tajinaste rojo, is a spectacular natural spectacle on Tenerife. Every year between mid-May and mid-June, the otherwise barren volcanic landscape of the Teide National Park is transformed into a sea of colour when these endemic plants are in full bloom. The up to three metre high inflorescences of the tajinaste rojo are not only an impressive sight, but also play an important role in the ecosystem by attracting bees, which then produce the coveted tajinaste honey.
