Antonia Zárate (1775 - 1811) was a famous actress from Barcelona, who was successful throughout Spain. She was the daughter of the actor Pedro de Zárate Valdés and was married to the singer Bernardo Gil y Aguado. From this marriage came Antonio Gil de Zárate, a famous poet and playwright. Antonia Zárate was to pose for Goya twice: around 1805 for the painting in Dublin and shortly before her death in 1811 for a portrait that can now be seen in the Hermitage.
