As a female artist, it is important to have examples of one's own gender. Frieda Kahlo was a passionate artist who lived on her own terms. Although she had to endure a lot emotionally and physically, she used this in her work.
To me, she is an example of stubbornness, but also of the fact that not everything she made had to be beautiful, and that it became so because there was so much feeling in it. I put a heart on her head because she was a woman of passion.
Some time ago I made a series of my heroines and she was the first one I wanted to capture in my own style.
Made with fineliner, pencil and marker on paper, post-processed in photoshop.
My work distinguishes itself by strong colours and clear shapes. I work with ecoline, ink and pencil, but I also like to cut and paste.
I get my inspiration from nature and like to daydream. Animals and people sometimes seem to melt together in these reveries.
Besides my children's book 'Emilie and the Bear' I also like to make illustrations based on what I see in the city: people in the park for example. The corona crisis has also influenced my work.
You can often spot me drawing in the park, in a café or on the beach.
