The Furkapasweg was built between 1864 and 1867 as an extension of the existing old trade route. The Furka pass was already used in Roman times. In the 13th century the economic importance increased and goods were transported over the pass road on a regular basis. From 1867 a mail coach drove over the pass and from 1921 the post bus.
On 28th September 2000, after 40 years of construction, the Valais part of the renovated Furkapasweg was inaugurated in Gletsch. The more than 10 kilometer long route from Gletsch to the pass height has been completely widened. Due to the high mountain climate, work on the road was only possible for four months of the year.
