WvH Profile picture The Fushimi Inari-taisha (Japanese: ??????) or Oinari-san is a jinja shrine (shrine) in the Fushimi-ku district of the Japanese city of Kyoto. The shrine is dedicated to the kami (god) Inari and forms the main shrine of about a third of all Inari shrines in Japan. The shrine is among the oldest and best-known Shintoist shrines in Kyoto. In doing so, the shrine also attracts the most visitors of all Shinto shrines in Japan; especially at Japanese New Year (especially the Hatsum?de contributes to this) and uma no hi (first day of the horse according to the ancient Japanese calendar) in February, when the shrine (like all Shintoist shrines) has been performing the Hatsu-uma matsuri since 708. At the Fushimi Inari shrine, however, this ritual is called Hatsu-uma-tai-sha and lasts for 21 days. The shrine is best known for its galleries, which are covered by thousands of scarlet torii (gates), all donated by individuals, families or companies. These galleries lead upwards over a hill, where at the top -very unusual for a shinto shrine- the most sacred object (in this case, a mirror) is visible to all.
