A self-portrait where the girl with the pearl is recreated based on findings from 2018 to 2020. The multidisciplinary study - a collaboration of the Mauritshuis in The Hague with the Nicas and several other partners led by Dr. Abbie Vandivere, curator of paintings at the Mauritshuis - ran from February 2018 to spring 2020.
During that period, the painting was vetted with all kinds of equipment (microscopes, macro-XRF scanners) and tiny samples from the paint skin were analyzed, some from the 1990s, some recently extracted. In short, the girl appeared to have eyebrows and eyelashes originally and appeared to be standing in front of a green curtain.
With this self-portrait, I tried to get into Vermeer's head, and how thus the original portrait was intended. I'm sure there will be differences, but I hope to have captured the mood well.

It all started with a4 paper and HB pencils. As a child I was often impressed by how beautiful the world around me was. The urge to capture this beautiful world, and to show the people around me what I saw, was actually there from the beginning. If I remember correctly, I was about eleven years old when I first met the camera. Of course it was a simple compact camera with a ridiculous quality, but I enjoyed it.
I sometimes said I wanted to be a photographer, but of course you have one of the two parents who says, "Dream on." Strangely enough, I followed the sarcastic remark as advice, and still went to study photography.
