Scientific research into Johannes Vermeer's world-famous painting, known as the Girl with a Pearl Earring, has produced new discoveries and insights.
While to the naked eye the Girl always appears 'eyelashless', macro X-ray fluorescence scanning and a microscope revealed tiny hairs around both eyes that have disappeared over the centuries. These discoveries, among others, make the Girl more 'personal' than previously thought".
