Although native peoples did enter the valley, there were no permanent residents until 1884. The first homesteaders were often single men, who had to adjust to the long winters and hard ground. By 1890, an estimated 60 people lived in Jackson Hole. Ranching increased rapidly in the 1900s to 1920s.
Grand Teton National Park is a national park in Wyoming in the United States, south of Yellowstone. The park is named after Grand Teton, one of the mountains of the Teton Mountains, 4197 metres high and the highest mountain in the park. The park includes much of the valley below, the Jackson Hole. The Teton Mountains got their name from a French trapper, who called them tétons, French for nipple. The park covers an area of 1255 km² and has been a national park since 26 February 1929.
