The most common woodpecker in the Netherlands. Both male and female rummage on branches with a short quick rummage to reinforce territory and pair bonding. Great spotted woodpeckers carve out a nest cavity in trees with a round hole. They prefer soft woods, such as birch. Woodpeckers can hack that way because the brain is encased in a kind of shock absorber. Inside the nest cavity, the eggs are simply laid on the wood.
Regularly when I go for a walk I take the camera with me. Along the way I listen to the surroundings. This woodpecker I heard loud and clear. Only the search was still a thingy. The woodpecker is in full action here by hammering on a pine cone.
