Loek Lobel Profile picture The green iguana (Iguana iguana) is a lizard of the family iguanas (Iguanidae). It is one of the best known species of iguanas because of its size, manageability and the menu that consists of plants. The green iguana is a popular species in zoos and is even kept as an exotic pet by private individuals.
The green iguana can reach a length of up to two meters and is considered to be the most impressive of all iguanas.[2] The long tail covers two thirds of the total body length. The iguana is usually green in colour but can also take on other colours. There is a subspecies that develops small cones on the snout tip, but most specimens do not have these structures.
The green iguana is easily recognisable by the characteristic, strongly enlarged round scale at the back of the head. In addition, the throat comb and the pronounced prickly comb on the back are a clear distinction, especially the neck spines are very long. The green iguana lives in southern North America, all of Central America and large parts of northern and central South America. The iguana occurs in forests and is found in branches, preferably along the water's edge.[4] Once mature, the iguana is a vegetarian who mainly eats leaves (folivore). The species is spread all over the world because it is a popular exotic pet.
