On the bird island in Varanger Norway, it's a bustle when the breeding season gets underway. By the thousands, Guillemots, Razorbills, Puffins, Shags and many other bird species come to breed on the cliffs. A safe place to raise young. The hustle and bustle and neighborly squabbles then have to be put up with from time to time.
The coming and going of the Guillemots is a true spectacle. A nice detail in the more northern breeding colonies of this bird species is that proportionally more of the Guillemots here have the white line around the eyes than in the breeding colonies around for example England and Ireland.
This photo gives me back the feeling I had when I was on this bird island; an intimate glimpse into their daily lives. They are not afraid of people and pretend you are not there. You are right on the action and nature in its purest form.
I am a biologist from the cozy province of Brabant, and have been fascinated by nature since childhood. I love to spend my days in the open air, capturing the beautiful things I find with my camera.
