The fishing town of Essaouira is located in the west of Morocco on the Atlantic Ocean. Essaouira has a rich history as a trading place on the coast, a place where Arabs, Europeans and Africans used to meet. In the sixties and seventies it was the place to be for artists, musicians and hippies, among others Jimi liked to come there. The vibe that reigns there is quite unique, although more and more old riads are being taken over by retired westerners. The walled medina is a UNESCO world heritage site and, like the mellah (the extinct, old Jewish quarter), lends itself to hours of wandering. At the harbour, fresh fish is grilled in front of you and on the beach you can bump through the surf with a camel. Photo was taken at sunrise.
