Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French painter, graphic artist and sculptor who is considered one of the most influential artists of modernism. Known as a leading representative of Fauvism, his works are characterised by bright colours, bold forms and an emphasis on simplification. Matisse experimented with various techniques, including collage, and created iconic works such as *The Dance* and *The Joy of Life*. His late work, in particular the "Papiers découpés" (paper cut-outs), testifies to his innovative and radical approach to art. Matisse left behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists today.
