The Hereford is a breed of cow originally from the southwest of England. In the second half of the eighteenth century this characteristic hard and durable beef cattle developed around the market town Hereford. It became so popular that it has developed into the most common beef cattle breed in the world. There are both horned and polled Herefords.
In the Netherlands, the Hereford is mainly kept as a hobby animal or for extensive livestock farming (i.e. grazing of nature reserves).
