Hohenwerfen Fortress is a medieval hilltop castle in Werfen in the province of Salzburg between the Tennen, Hagen and Hochkönig mountains in the Salzach Valley.
Hohenwerfen Fortress is located in the middle of the Northern Limestone Alps in the Pongau region and is comparable in its layout to Hohensalzburg Fortress, which was built in the same years.
The fortress, which is clearly visible from the north and south, is enthroned at the northern end of the market town of Werfen on a rock cone rising 113 m above the Salzach River, the Werfener Burgberg (697 m above sea level).
