The humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) is a colony brother of the coast of Peru and Chile. The species owes its name to the German scientist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt.
The bird is mainly greyish-black with a silvery-white belly, a black band over the chest and a white eyebrow stripe. Around the beak base the animal has a pink batch. Once a year they moult, whereby the old plumage is replaced by a shiny new plumage. The legs are black. The body height is 56 to 66 cm and the weight 4 to 5 kg.
