After only 2 years of construction, the GREEN CITADEL OF MAGDEBURG has been standing unmistakably on Breite Weg since October 3, 2005 - Friedensreich Hundertwasser's design of an "oasis for humanity and for nature in a sea of rational houses".
The artist, who was born in Vienna on December 15, 1928, had been devoting himself increasingly to architecture in addition to painting since the 1950s. For him, there was a close connection between the form of architecture and the well-being of the people living in it.
In the GREEN CITADEL OF MAGDEBURG, all of Hundertwasser's architectural concerns are perfectly fused. Thus, at his "...most beautiful and best building..." golden spheres shining from afar can be found on the towers, "tree tenants" look out of "dancing windows", flower meadows on the roofs and ramps are fragrant, and undulating floors as "melodies for the feet" carry visitors buoyantly through the inner courtyards. Inside the building, people in search may find their suitable 3rd skin among the 55 different apartments. As a residential and commercial building, THE GREEN CITADEL OF MAGDEBURG offers not only individual living space but also experience space: attractive stores and event spaces, a hotel, a theater, offices, medical practices and a kindergarten are housed in the architectural project.
